Legendary, five-time Emmy Award-winner Dick Van Dyke – recognized for his iconic TV roles in 2013 with a “Lifetime Achievement Award by the Screen Actors Guild – enjoyed yet another hit series for eight seasons (1993-2001) as Dr. Mark Sloan on CBS’ hour-long murder mystery, Diagnosis Murder.
As chief of internal medicine at Community General Hospital in Los Angeles (though the first few episodes shot in Denver) and an L.A.P.D. consultant, Sloan has a knack for getting into trouble, negotiating the twists and turns of mysteries and solving crimes with the help of his son, Steve, a homicide detective played by real-life son Barry Van Dyke.
Often joining in the fray are cast regulars Dr. Amanda Bentley-Livingston (Cynthia Gibb in the pilot movies and Victoria Rowell in the series), resident pathologist at the hospital, assistant county medical examiner and Sloan’s partner; Dr. Jack Stewart (Stephen Caffrey in the pilots, Scott Baio in seasons 1–2), a hospital doctor and Sloan’s best friend; Dr. Jesse Travis (Charlie Schlatter, seasons 3-8), an E.R. resident, who Sloan takes under his wing and who becomes best friends with Amanda; Norman Briggs (Michael Tucci, seasons 1-4), administrator of the hospital and a close friend of Sloan, even though often exasperated by him; and Delores Mitchell (Delores Hall, seasons 1-2), Sloan’s lively secretary. Recurring characters include Dr. Madison Wesley (Joanna Cassidy, season 7) and Alex Martin (Shane Van Dyke, Barry’s real-life son and Dick’s grandson, seasons 7-8) as a med student.
Uniquely, the series often “borrowed” established characters from various classic television programs – even Van Dyke’s beloved “Rob Petrie” from the Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-66) – and the show includes frequent guest appearances by a who’s who of Hollywood (many in character) including Andy Griffith, Mike Connors, Chad Everett, Jack Klugman, Peter Graves, Robert Culp, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Phyllis Diller, Robert Stack, Charlotte Rae, Elliott Gould, Loretta Swit, Sally Kellerman, Cloris Leachman, Adrienne Barbeau, Patrick Duffy, Kathie Lee Gifford, Bryan Cranston, George Takei, Shelley Long, Adam West, Stephen J. Cannell, Jerry Van Dyke, Donny & Marie Osmond, Stephanie Zimbalist, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Gerald McRaney, Dom DeLuise, Dick Martin, Robert Guillaume, Michelle Phillips, Barbara Mandrell, Morgan Fairchild, David Naughton, Dyan Cannon, Leah Remini, Dixie Carter, George Hamilton, Vicki Lawrence, Ken Howard, Rick Dees and Morton Downey, Jr., among others.
